ASSET, COMPASS, CPAt, TABE, WBST, and other "Ability to Benefit" tests

In the old days, some students were enrolled in vocational education (job training) programs even though they did not have enough skill in English and math benefit from the classes. The schools took money from the US government in the form of loans or grants for tuition for these students, even though these students couldn't understand the lessons, and couldn't pass the courses or become employed after they left the school. Now the government requires most students to pass some kind of "Ability to Benefit" test in reading, writing, and math before getting government financial aid for a job training program. The federal government has made a long list of acceptable tests and acceptable scores. Some of the most common tests are ASSET, COMPASS, CPAt, TABE, and WBST.

If you are not sure about your math skills, take a practice or sample test on the school's website. Suggestion: If you find that some of your correct answers were just guesses, and you really don't know how to do that math, count the item as incorrect.

Remember that the entrance exams are usually much easier than the math you will need to master for your job. Even if you do pass the test, you might have trouble doing the math that is taught in class or assigned for homework. You might want to get a math kit now, so you can improve your skills before the class starts (Getting IN is not the same as getting THROUGH and OUT.)

If you suffer from math anxiety, or if you know you need more math practice, get your ONE-DAY MATH kit as soon as possible, so you will have plenty of time to use it before taking the next test. During your courses, you might a lot of homework, and the new math lessons might be covered quickly. If you fall behind, you will feel frustrated, and you will be in danger of failing the exit exam.
