*ONE-DAY MATH for Boston Reed Health Career courses*

Recommended for Students and Instructors

Boston Reed College provides a wide range of career training courses in more than 20 states, usually in collaboration with other schools or colleges. ONE-DAY MATH provides a practical math review for most Boston Reed courses, and is recommended by Boston Reed especially for the health career courses. Boston Reed has put links on their website, notes in the course materials for instructors, and a notice in their course catalog, referring students and instructors to ONE-DAY MATH.

1. All incoming Health Career students (except Phlebotomy) need to take an easy math test on the first day, because they need math skills to learn drug dosage calculations. If you cannot get all or most questions correct on the practice test, you should order a math kit now to practice before the real test.

2. Getting INTO the class is the easiest part. Students need to get THROUGH the course, including a final exam with drug dosage calculations, and they need to remember the math well enough to pass their state licensing exam months or years later. Most of the math comes after the midterm, in the last few weeks of class. Instructors are supposed to spend only a very short time reviewing fractions, cross-multiplication, conversions to the metric system, and other basic math skills. Students are expected to master most of the math skills on their own, BEFORE they get to drug dosage calculations. Class time should be used mainly for lessons on how to administer drugs, and other important medical information.

Most important, students need to apply math accurately in real life. The examples on the Handout are easy compared to what you might need to do on the job.
